African patterns fall under two categories, Geometric and Symbolic. Parallel zigzags are to reminisce the path of the ancestors.  To show nothing in life is straightforward, the path will be difficult. 
Chequerboard black and white triangles or squares represent the separation of knowledge and ignorance.  White is the beginning process of learning, black the accumulation of wisdom.
